With Haiti devastated from an earthquake that measured 7.0 on the Richter scale, New Rochelleans are rallying to help. Though the Haitian city of Port au-Prince is located over 1,500 miles from the Queen City of the Sound, it is still on the radar of the city’s residents and businesses. On Monday, Knotz Hair Studio contributed to the cause through a program called “Haircuts for Haiti.”
Charging $20 per haircut, approximately half the amount the studio usually charges, Knotz cut the hair of 86 participants raising a total of $1,720 in the process.

“Our staff was very willing to do it because they know what Haiti is going through,” explained co-owner Laura Conlon. “It makes us feel good to know that we are giving back.”

Co-owner Diane Tozzo was also appreciative that the staff did not hesitate to give to those affected by the earthquake.

“All of the girls are donating their time,” Tozzo said. “It is great that people want to help and want to make a difference. Our staff is compassionate and caring, not to mention talented.”

Knotz had 18 stylists working throughout the day. When a sign-up sheet was placed in the break room, it took less than a day for the sheet to fill up with volunteers.

“We can’t get over there to help but we are doing what we can to assist those in need,” explained stylist Bethany Bevilacqua, who has worked at Knotz for the past 13 years. “I had a client bring in three bags of clothes for Haiti. Customers are getting a good deal as well. They usually spend $60 per haircut and this is not only a gift to them but it is for a good cause.”

According to Conlon, the response from the community was amazing. Knotz held similar fundraisers for 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina, but this was the best turnout they have gotten.

Similar events have taken place nationwide including places like Richland, Wash., Tyler, Texas, Foley, Ala., Cincinnati, Ohio and Rockford, Ill.

“People are getting a great service for a great cause,” said employee Danielle Tedesco. “They are really suffering over there. If it happened to us they would be helping.”
