Views vary on tax abatements Some remember when the Kaufman Building dwarfed all other structures around it downtown. Others not-so-fondly recall the New Rochelle Mall, which closed in 1992. Then in the 1990s came the beginning of a downtown redevelopment – New Roc City was the first step; towers sprung up in the Queen City skyline shortly thereafter. |

Developer, college and residents mull compromise The restoration of the New Rochelle Naval Armory is one step closer to becoming a reality, though the possibility it will be razed as part of the Echo Bay development remains. The Save the Armory Committee (SAC) met with representatives from both Forest City and Monroe College on Aug. 12 to discuss their ideas for a use to the building. Currently, a feasibility study is being conducted by Forest City to see if the armory can be incorporated into their future plans to develop Echo Bay. |

Performing Arts Center proposal nixed Demolition work is underway on the bell tower of the North Avenue Presbyterian Church after portions of the structure fell onto the sidewalk next to the police station during Fourth of July weekend. The church, which is currently vacant, had a proposal to be converted into a performing arts center, but that plan is now dead. |
